SERVING THE COMMUNITY: More than Food Chris Williams
Chris Williams of Lucille’s restaurant is an award-winning chef, entrepreneur, and Houston humanitarian. Lifetime Learning is excited to welcome him to Brenham as our luncheon speaker on April 29th.
After offering meals to the under-resourced in Sunnyside, Acres Homes, and Fifth and Third Wards in Houston during the pandemic, Williams founded his non-profit Lucille’s 1913 to continue his humanitarian effort. Since beginning in 2020, it has served 400,000 meals. The non-profit has also arranged for ten acres of land in the historically Black community south of Houston to raise fresh produce for food deserts and provide jobs and foodservice training. Food waste from the restaurants will be turned into compost to nurture those gardens. In support of Williams’ landmark work, the Kinder Foundation in 2022 awarded Lucille’s 1913 a $1.3 million grant.
Williams’ humanitarian effort has been recognized by Bon Appétit’s Heads of the Table Awards List honoring restaurateurs who made a difference during the pandemic and who continue to focus on their communities, sustainability, and creating a better restaurant industry. Additionally, he has been awarded Houston Area Urban League’s Quentin Mease Community Service Award.
Williams’ culinary achievements have also been honored, including a James Beard Award Finalist for Outstanding Restaurateur, Nation’s Restaurant News 2022 Power List, and Restaurant Hospitality’s 2021 Rising Star class.
