For several years a small group of women in Brenham, dedicated to continuing education and lifetime learning, traveled weekly, sometimes even daily, to Houston to attend classes at The Women’s Institute of Houston and at Rice University-Continuing Studies.
In 2001, wishing to start a program of continuing education in Washington County, they contacted by mail over 300 men and women, to ascertain if there was widespread interest in the program. They were encouraged by the response they received and excited about the many subjects that people indicated were of interest and about which they wanted to learn.
Since then, Lifetime Learning has had a variety of speakers at luncheons, lecture series, and Sunday afternoon programs. Subjects have included the world-wide growth of fundamentalist religious groups, the history of the Texas revolution, the future of Social Security, opera appreciation, new developments in cardiology and health care, the plight of women in Afghanistan and elsewhere, and the appreciation of European art and history.
Volunteers work to recruit speakers, select menus, decorate tables for luncheons, and publicize all events.
We welcome your participation and suggestions.
