Houston's Pride of Persia
Hosts: Mehdi Abedi & Lisa Slappey

Join us as Lifetime Learning takes a field trip on April 18th, Mehdi Abedi and Lisa Slappey, rug experts and owners of Pride of Persia, will host a private visit to their Persian rug gallery in Houston.

We’ll begin with coffee as people arrive. Then Mehdi and Lisa will treat us to the beautiful rugs in their gallery. Persian rug history will be illustrated using old and post-modern contemporary rugs. They will explain the qualities of a good rug, care and maintenance to extend a rug’s life, and restoration. Mehdi and Lisa encourage those attending to bring any of their own rugs to learn more about them. They are also offering attendees a $50 discount on rug purchase, cleaning, or repair.

We’ll end with a Mediterranean lunch prepared by Mehdi. Lisa and Mehdi welcome us to stay and mingle as long as we like.

Our hosts, Mehdi Abedi and Lisa Slappey

Mehdi Abedi was born into a rug-weaving family in Iran in 1952 and immigrated to the United States when he was twenty-four. He received his PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Rice in 1987 and shortly after began his career with a one year Rockefeller Fellowship. He’s also taught at the University of Houston, St. Thomas, and the Women’s Institute. Mehdi has been teaching The World of Persian Rugs at Rice for the past 27 years.

Lisa Slappey completed her PhD in English at Rice University and joined Mehdi in selling Persian rugs by private appointment. Pride of Persia was born in 1996 when they acquired exhibit space in Carolyn Thompson’s Antique Center of Texas. They expanded to feature over 4,000 rugs. In 2009, Pride of Persia opened a new showroom in the Houston Design Center. To meet the growing demand for Tibetan-style rugs, they added Postmodern Traditions Custom and Contemporary Gallery in 2011.

More information about Mehdi, Lisa, and Pride of Persia rugs can be found at their website.
