CELEBRATING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE HOUSTON ZOO
Rodney Honerkamp
Picture
Lifetime Learning welcomes Rodney Honerkamp, Director of Development for the Houston Zoo, as our luncheon speaker on September 23. His presentation will highlight the zoo’s history, its centennial celebration this year, and the new exhibits funded by the completion of a $150 million capital campaign.

The Houston Zoo is the second most visited zoo in the United States, with over six thousand animals. By special request, Rodney will tell us about their ever popular Masai giraffes and the zoo’s program allowing the public to feed these tallest of the world’s creatures! Hear about these amazing animals and then become even more spell-bound reading West With Giraffes, the 2022 Community READ.

We hope you will place this on your calendar and join us for lunch on September 23.

Rodney Honerkamp’s roots run deep in Brenham and the surrounding area. He was raised in Austin County and attended the Kenney-New Wehdem School.. He graduated from both Brenham High School and Blinn College, While he was growing up, Rodney worked with his parents at their Pecan Corner business in Brenham. After earning a business degree at the University of Texas in Austin, Rodney relocated to Houston where he built his career.

Rodney had the opportunity to learn about other cultures through international travel that began his junior year at Brenham High School. He was one of twelve young professionals chosen to represent North America on a cultural exchange program in Japan and was also honored to be selected as a Rotary Foundation Scholar to Spain. Rodney’s early interest in international cultures gave him a basis for his employment with the State Department welcoming foreign dignitaries to Houston and as a major gifts officer for the American Red Cross.

Rodney is still rooted in place in Brenham. He restored his grandparents’ home on Ross Street that has been in the family over one hundred years. He generously donated tickets to the library’s summer reading program for kids and is a Lifetime Member of the Heritage Society of Washington County.
