THE MYSTERY OF BEES
Bees are a mystery to most of us, but Michael Kelling understands them like no other. Kelling started beekeeping while farming in Uvalde County in the late 1970’s. “I had 60 acres of cucumbers and had to lease beehives to pollinate them. The bees would swarm and land on a fence post. No farmer can pass up something free, so I put the swarm in a box and that’s how I started the first time.” His second effort at beekeeping began as a hobby in Washington County and grew to 150 hives.

Kelling and his wife Donna hosted the first class of the Central Texas Beekeepers School in 2008. By 2017, attendance had grown to 100 and despite a hiatus caused by Covid, the beginners beekeeping class jumped to 750 by 2022. Now a grandparent of twelve, Kelling no longer manages his 150 hives and has stepped down from the role of Director of the Beekeepers School. However, he remains an enthusiastic participant. This retired school teacher, professional photographer, and active Santa will be a delightful luncheon presenter!
f you’ve read the Washington County READ selection for 2025, The Music of Bees, by Eileen Garvin, Kelling’s presentation will be the perfect opportunity to ask questions! Does the queen really sing in G-sharp/A-flat?
Don’t forget the Washington County READ reception October 7th at 5:30 at Unity Theatre. Eileen Garvin will speak to us about her novel and sign books. Actors from Unity will present a dramatic reading. And, of course, we will offer small bites and beverages. All are welcome. There’s no charge, it’s our gift to the community.
