Margaret Cook, PhD

Dr. Margaret Cook is Vice-President of Water and Community Resilience with the Houston Advanced Research Center. HARC addresses social, economic, and environmental challenges to communities by developing and implementing science-driven sustainable solutions. Dr. Cook leads a team of experts whose goal includes building collaboration within a community to ensure the availability and affordability of clean water.
 
Dr. Cook received her PhD in Civil Engineering, a Master’s in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

THE ISAMU TANIGUCHI JAPANESE GARDEN
Evan Taniguchi
Evan K. Taniguchi will speak to us about the profound backstory, structural symbolism, and design principles of the Isamu Taniguchi Japanese Garden. As a gift to Austin, his grandfather Isamu, who had been detained at the Crystal City internment camp during World War II, created the Japanese Garden at Zilker Park when he was seventy years old.

Evan is an architect and founding member/principal of Taniguchi Architects. He has lived in Austin since 1963 where his family has been widely involved in the shaping of Austin. His father Alan, developed the first Town Lake Master Plan, while Evan also helped found the Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy to preserve his grandfather Isamu’s legacy. Besides his architectural career, Evan is widely recognized for his community service, whether professional or social activism. As a City of Austin Design Commissioner for 14 years, Evan has been a strong advocate for smart growth, affordable housing and mitigating climate change.
