Healing Power of Plants and Nature
Jay Maddock, PhD - Texas A&M University School of Public Health

Science is discovering what many people intuitively know: spending time with nature benefits us—not only our mood, but our physical well-being, too. Immune function, blood pressure, cortisol levels, and motor skills for both adults and children are all shown to improve with time spent outdoors.

In his presentation, Dr. Maddock will share his research and encourage us to live a healthy life through the healing power of plants and nature.

Mark your calendars for February 16th, 11:30 a.m., at The Cannery Kitchen, 314 E. Alamo St. in Brenham. Register for this luncheon ($25) by February 14th,

Join Lifetime Learning for this first luncheon presentation of the New Year!

Gone with the Wind, but Not Forgotten
ReShonda Tate, Author
Picture
In collaboration with the Brenham Activist Association, Texas Ten Historical Explorers, and Sigma Chi Chi Professional Women’s Group, Lifetime Learning is proud to host the acclaimed author ReShonda Tate as the February luncheon speaker in celebration of Black History Month.

ReShonda Tate’s The Queen of Sugar Hill  (2024, Harper Collins) is a book of historical fiction about the life of Hattie McDaniel, the first African American to win an Academy Award. Despite the Jim Crow climate of her time, McDaniel was a prolific screen actress before and after her Oscar-winning performance as Mammy in the 1940 classic Gone with the Wind. Though the white film industry too often cast her in roles marred by negative racial stereotypes, and for which she received criticism by Black activists for not fighting back, she appeared in over 300 films with acclaimed actors such as Barbara Stanwyck and James Stewart. Hattie McDaniel’s esteemed career in radio and film is honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Please join us February 28th, at the Cannery. Seating is limited, so register early!
