Born into a rug-weaving family in Central Iran in 1952, Mehdi came to America in January 1976 to begin his higher education in Lawrence, Kansas while working in a 24-hr restaurant as a dishwasher, cook, host, and manager. He entered Rice University in 1981 where he worked on his PhD in cultural anthropology. Graduating in 1987, he worked as a Rockefeller Fellow at Rice for one year, after which he taught a variety of disciplines at Rice,University of Houston, St. Thomas, Women's Institute, etc. In 1981 he used his first stipend check from Rice to start his rug business, 10 rugs for a total of $2,800. He has been teaching a course on the world of Persian Rugs at Rice for the past 27 years. Rugs are his passion!
