Born into a rug-weaving family in Central Iran in 1952, Mehdi came to America in January 1976 to begin his higher education in Lawrence, Kansas while working in a 24-hr restaurant as a dishwasher, cook, host, and manager. He entered Rice University in 1981 where he worked on his PhD in cultural anthropology. Graduating in 1987, he worked as a Rockefeller Fellow at Rice for one year, after which he taught a variety of disciplines at Rice,University of Houston, St. Thomas, Women's Institute, etc. In 1981 he used his  first stipend check from Rice to start his rug business, 10 rugs for a total of $2,800. He has been teaching a course on the world of Persian Rugs at Rice for the past 27 years. Rugs are his passion!​

There once was a Spaniard who changed the course of art forever. There once was Frenchman who felt slighted and changed it even more. There once was an Austrian who tried to conquer the world. These items, and more, lead to a conclusion of Modernism, all its quirks and how the colonies finally grabbed the brass ring to become the trendsetters and makers of the art world.

This 2 hour lecture will begin with a light lunch, including iced tea and coffee provided by Blinn, and end with an understanding of how America captured the title of ​“Art Capital of the World” from Paris, and has hung on to it to the present day. ​There will be time during and at the end of the lecture where challenges may be made and questions answered.

This 9th Annual Washington County READ Event will be celebrated at Unity Theatre and the community is invited to attend and hear the author, Paulette Jiles, give answers to the whys, wherefores, and hows that went into writing News of the World .  

Unity Theatre will present a dramatic reading and refreshments will be served. Please join us, at Unity Theatre, and be our guests, for this evening of community enjoyment.


Join other Lifetime Learning members in September for the Washington County READ proclamations. 
Please arrive 10 minutes early for a photo opportunity. This is a great way to support and publicize the READ.
